 Your consumer unit is the main distribution point for the electrics in your property, they contain all the safety devices to make your electrical installation safe.
If you have an old fuse board with rewireable fuses it is generally recommended that these should be upgraded for both safetys sake and for the fact that modern ones are much more conveient; they are much easier to reset in the event of an overload. The added protection that modern units provide is quicker response times by the overload protective device (MCB) and protection against earth leakage (RCD); RCD's trip in the event of an earth fault which can either be due to damage to cables, accesories or appliances or in the event that a person touches a live part. |
