Ready for epoxy coating!

… The starboard side at least;)

Now that I’ve sanded down all the excess epoxy Lindisfarne is ready for her epoxy coats,, but not until the weather is better. This cold damp Winter air is just no good:(

Once I’ve done the starboard side I can get her out of the garage, fill all the screw heads and the epoxy the port side. I think I might have to dig out the heads first though:(

However I did manage to sand down the epoxy after re-fitting the port side beading:)

Finally,, no more holes!

Having a few spare minutes this afternoon I decided that I’d put them to good use and finish off the rear quarter hull repair; so after a bit of planeing and sanding I’m quite pleased with the results of my labours.

No more holes

Seeing as I now had my 6mm ply cut to shape and I had got some A4 stainless steel screws from a local chandlers I thought that I had best crack on with repairing the final hole, so with the knee and stringer epoxied and screwed to the transom and chine I fitted the support pads.

After letting that lot go off I’ve now fitted the panel (more epoxy and screws)
IMG_20120119_153311

I just need to trim the panel a little and fit the new piece of mahogany quadrant bead; and that will be that side repaired.

Prepping the hull repair

I decided that it be a much easier repair if I removed the section of the hull all the way to the keel as I’d then have 3 ready built supports for the new section (hog, transom and stringer), I’d only have to make a pad(s) for the one side.

so,,, I got some 6mm marine ply delivered the other day and made the panels ready for fitting once I get some stainless steel screws (panels will be epoxied in place)

Spotty boat;)

Here’s my latest photos, I’ve now finished fairing off my scarfed in repairs and filling the screw heads, I’ve just got to sand down the excess epoxy.
IMG_20111228_140623

I’ve also dry fitted my replacement knee and stringer, I know that its not the right wood, but the laminated marine ply sheeting will be more than strong enough and seeing as it’s on the “dry” side, will be epoxy coated and varnished, I think that it will be more than adequate.

Sanding, filling and cutting.

Well I spent a few more hours out working on Lindisfarne this afternoon; I sanded down and filled any imperfections in my repairs ready for more sanding (fairing off) and while I had a mix of epoxy on the go I filled some damage on the keel.

I also made the stringer repair piece and epoxied together some ply to eventually replace the transom knee, I know it’s not mahogany like it should be but it will be throughly coated in epoxy, is on the “dry” side of the boat and will be plenty strong enough.

Maybe I’ll get some spare time next weekend, I bet my wife won’t be too happy seeing as it’s Christmas, so I might have to leave it for a few more days :(

More holes…

After almost finishing off repairing the forward holes today I decided that I’d investigate the “soft” stringer,,, after a bit of diging and drilling I found that it was totally rotten for the last 6″, thankfully the rest of it is ok; however I did find that there was a soft patch on the underside of the hull and once that (and the stringer) were removed the rear bracket was found to have some soft parts.

It’s getting a chance to dry out now that it’s all apart so I’ll see what it looks like in a few days.

Filling holes

This week I have just received some 1.5mm Khaya mahogany construction veneer, West epoxy resin and microfibers.

I have now started the repairs,

This is the compound bend and up to now I have only done two layers.

IMG_20111203_121748

I found that it was very difficult to get the first layer to keep it’s form so I decided that I’ll only do one at a time from now on, sanding down in between layers.

This is the other hole, I decided that I’d repair it using the same method as the other hole, I’ve got plenty of veneer……
IMG_20111203_132901

…and now the third layer; I wasn’t too happy with just the staples as the contact area is very small so I’ve stapled some scrap cable under it,,, seems to work ;-)

Finished stripping

Today I finally finished sanding the hull, I also removed a couple of sections of the beading where it was coming away… It also looks like there is a fair bit of seperation of the ply from the transom, not too much seperation of the plys although I think that I will have to replace a small section of the hull on the starboard side.

IMG_20111119_160316

IMG_20111119_160325

The stringer at this point is very soft, just got to decide if I can stabilise it with resin or if I’ll have to replace that section.

IMG_20111119_160333

Where the wood has seperated I’ll run my Bosch blade down it to clean it out and fill the gap with epoxy resin and clamp it together.

IMG_20111119_160349

IMG_20111119_160407

I also dug out a load of filler from the screw heads, not finished that job yet although I have managed to do both undersides, just got to do the chines now :-(

Chopping out the old repairs

Over the last few days I’ve finished off stripping the paint off the hull and I’ve also started to sand it.

This afternoon I had a spare hour or two so I decided to see what those dodgy repairs were made of… So out comes my Bosch multi tool and I set too it.

Here’s what I found…..

This is the largest of the resin repairs that I found, just above the keel, it’s the first frame that you can now see
IMG_20111118_145100

Not so much of a repair as a get you by bodge,,, they’d just pushed it full of epoxy,, they hadn’t even tried to gut out the damage!

This is the one on the prow where I think someone had caught her with the trailers front V support
IMG_20111118_145656

This one was just a filler repair over a ding, I’m quite happy just building this up with thickened epoxy.
IMG_20111118_150250

and I still had time to prep the first one for a scarf repair. I’m going to have to build up the ply laminate one layer at a time here because it’s a compound angle
IMG_20111118_164611

again my trusty multitool made light work of this with a sanding pad… I’ve just got to get the veneer and epoxy to finish the job ;-)
